The eighth annual Innovation Roadshow® was not only a success, but also our largest to date!
With showcases demonstrating almost 100 new product concepts, flavors and technologies, attendees took a number of ideas for their own product lines - new flavor insights, unique product development applications, category transfer ideas, and most importantly, a renewed sense of creativity.
During the opening session, Roadmap to the Roadshow, David Michael’s marketing manager and trendspotter Erin O’Donnell encouraged participants to “look beyond the table. Her presentation got the morning off to a dynamic start with a behind-the scenes look at the Innovation Showcase and the trends that influenced this year’s product innovations.
Creativity is a way of life at David Michael, and with over 70 food scientists, flavor chemists, color engineers, chefs and technicians worldwide, we’ve got a lot of great ideas. The Roadshow’s Innovation Showcase gives our talented staff the opportunity to explore new concepts, conduct research or work outside of their area of expertise – allowing them to truly focus on innovation and reveal what’s on their own radars.
Just a few of this year’s highlights include:
- Varietal Mint Ice Cream – Inspired by chewing gum, we explored the use of spearmint and wintergreen in ice cream, as well as a new texture. Utilizing David Michael’s Michtex® technology, we were able to replicate the “stretchy texture of Turkish-style ice cream.
- Fortified Fruity Chicken Nuggets – For the picky eater in need of a nutritional boost, these nuggets boast vitamins and minerals, or deliver a serving of fruit. Choose from Cherry Lime or Apple Pie a la Mode (coated with real pie crust!).
- Kao Niow Dahm (Sticky Black Rice Dessert) – Once prized by Chinese royal, black rice is now the talk of health-conscious consumers. We made two variations of this popular Thai snack – Vanilla Raspberry and Rambutan Pandan.
During the Innovation Showcase, attendees enjoyed Technical Sessions focused on new European Union flavor regulations and working with alternative natural sweeteners.
The event ended with a keynote presentation by Mary Wagner, Ph.D., Senior Vice President, Global Research & Development/Quality for Starbucks Coffee Company. Her presentation educated our attendees on how to remain authentic to your brand, yet appeal to the local market to which you are selling.
